Robert Paul “Bud” Hicks, 74, of Grottoes, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, VA.

He was born in Jane Lew, WV on February 2, 1943, and was a son of the late Robert Courtney and Mary Ellen (Cottrill) Hicks. Bud was a retired machinist at Reynolds Metals (Alcoa) in Grottoes. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was united in marriage on June 19, 1965 to Barbara (Lipscomb) Hicks, of Grottoes.

Bud died doing what he loved, fishing, hanging with his friends, and enjoying Harborton and all the beautiful people of this village. He retired from Alcoa in February 2005 after forty years in the maintenance department. He was a member of NSSA for 44 years. He loved the competitive shooting of black powder guns. Bud loved gardening, animals, and birds. He also loved his wife and children.

Surviving in addition to his wife is his daughter, Ellen Myree Hicks, of Port Republic; a son, Robert Paul Hicks, II and wife Elizabeth, of Port Republic; two sisters, Carolyn Sue Campbell and husband Steve of Parkersburg, WV, and Carol Ann Higgins and husband George, of Buckhannon, WV; two brothers, James Steven Hicks, and Michael Leroy Hicks and wife Yukie, all of Jane Lew, WV. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was one of nine children and was preceded in death by four of his siblings.

A graveside service will be held at Edgewood Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 with Pastor Brian Posey officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 6-8 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Grottoes Fire Department, PO Box 67 Grottoes, Virginia 24441 or Grottoes Rescue Squad, 805 Augusta Ave., Grottoes, VA  24441.
