Grace A. Murphy, 95, wife of the late John W. Murphy of Onancock, VA, died at Heritage Hall on May 29, 2017.  She was born in Richmond Hill, NY to the late Dr. James S. Slavin and Amelia J. Slavin.  She was predeceased by her seven siblings.

After graduating from Queens College of New York City, she enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 as one of the first female recruits in World War II. She served as First Lieutenant at Camp Lejeune, NC. She met and married her husband there, also a Marine, and when both completed their military commitments, they moved to Onancock.

As an avid reader, Grace volunteered at the Eastern Shore Public Library for 30 years, until the age of 94.  She was a member of the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, the Debedeavon Garden Club, and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son, Michael J. Murphy and his wife Barbara, of Melfa, VA; her daughter, Mary M. Poland and her husband Randy, of Leesburg, VA; and four grandsons, Matt Murphy, Ben Murphy (wife Sophie), Michael Poland, and Douglas Poland.

A private family interment will be held at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery.
