Greydon W. Shield

Mr. Greydon W. Shield, 82, husband of Carolyn Byrd Shield and a resident of Parksley, VA, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.  Greydon was born August 31, 1935, in Exmore, VA, to the late Richard Ames Shield and Ellen Whaley Shield.

Following his service as an electronic technician in the United States Navy, Greydon began working for NASA, graduating from their first technician apprentice program.  He later began working for NOAA, where he retired at the age of 55.  He continued working, raising chickens for Tyson Foods, Inc., receiving the prestigious award of “Outstanding Poultry Producer” from the Delmarva Poultry Industry four times, the last time being 2009.  Greydon was a member of Temperanceville United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of American Legion Chincoteague Post 159, and member of the Loyal Order of Moose.  He was a diehard Redskins fan and an avid NASCAR race fan.  Over the years, he and Carolyn, along with friends, Jan and Toby and Eddie and Nancy, made many happy memories traveling to races together.  Greydon loved family gatherings, especially their breakfast get-togethers, Thanksgiving, and News Year’s Eve.  He was loved dearly by his family, and he will be greatly missed. 

In addition to his wife of nearly fifty-eight years, he is survived by his daughter, Lee Ellen Young and husband Wayne of Mearsville, VA; his son, Stewart Shield of Parksley; grandchildren, Matthew Young and wife Katie of Snow Hill, MD, Mariah Shield Thomas and husband Shawn of Atlantic, VA, Stephanie Young of Mearsville, and Maranda Shield of Modest Town, VA; and great-grandchildren, Raegan Thornes, Ella Thomas, and Wesley Birch.

A gathering of family and friends, to celebrate Greydon’s life, will be held at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
