Mr. Harry Ward Brough, Jr., 91, of Onancock, Va., husband of Monelle Newton-Brough, and the late Audrey Jean O’Steen Brough, passed away at his residence on Monday, June 15, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

Born February 7, 1924 in Long Beach, Calif., Harry was a son of the late Harry W. Brough and Helen Henderson Brough.  He was graduated from Cal Tech in California, and served his country in the United States Navy, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant, serving in both World War II and the Korean War.  Harry was a true pioneer of early computer development, and ultimately retired as an engineer with Shell Oil Company, following thirty-two dedicated years of service.

Following retirement to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Harry enjoyed being an active member of the Rotary Club of Onancock, and was extremely instrumental in bringing Broad Band to the Eastern Shore.  His extreme enthusiasm in working with the Broad Band initiative, earned him the affectionate nickname of “Mr. Broadband”, while promoting its benefits with many he encountered.  His lifelong quest of developing computers, expanding their capabilities and what they could offer, served Harry well in this position.

In addition to his wife Monelle, Harry is survived by two daughters, Helen Arlo Forrest (husband Daniel) of Angier, North Carolina, and Jean Carol Japinga (husband William) of Ardsley, New York; adopted daughter, Deborah Christie of Onancock; and two step-children, Alexa Shumate (husband Dan) of Houston, Texas, and William Newton of Austin, Texas; thirteen grandchildren, Daniel and Debra Dubick, Brian and Christopher Japinga, Cheryl Dubois, Cindy Laurin, Dorothy Ravellette, Paula Nash, John Forrest, Julia and Annabelle Newton, and Mason and Peyton Shumate; a brother-in-law, R.L. O’Steen of Douglas, Ga.; eighteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.  Besides his parents and first wife, Harry was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Arthur Brough; and a grandson, David Dubick.

A time to remember and celebrate Harry’s life, will be hosted at the home of Deborah Christie, 62 Kerr Street in Onancock, on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at 6:00 p.m.
