James W. Custis, Sr.
July 14, 1941 ~ January 6, 2018 (age 76) 76 Years OldJames W. Custis, Sr., affectionately known as “Big Jim,” of Moyock, NC, formerly of Onancock, VA, was found to have passed from this world on Saturday, January 6, 2018.
Big Jim was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on July 14, 1941 to the late Frances Custis, and raised in conjunction with her second husband, the late Roland Custis. He is survived by his brother, Elson Custis, also of Moyock; two children, James W. Custis, Jr., MD (Krissy), and Christina Lynn Custis-Thomas (Charles); three grandchildren, Ethan Alexander Custis, Oliver Manning Custis, and Christopher Custis; and two great-grandchildren, Emmalyn Custis and Jaxon Wyatt Custis.
Big Jim graduated from Onancock High School and enlisted in the United States Army, beginning active duty on November 21, 1963. He fought for the country he loved during the Vietnam War and remained in the military, proudly retiring as Sergeant First Class on November 30, 1983, after twenty years of service. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Big Jim was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Onancock Elks Lodge #1766, B.P.O.E., the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association, and a devoted fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend G. Wayne Parsley officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest alongside his beloved mother and father.
