John McGuire

January 14, 1943 ~ March 16, 2018 (age 75)

Mr. John Edward McGuire, 75, husband of Gretchen Higgins McGuire and a resident of Chincoteague, VA, formerly of New Alexandria, OH, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2018, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, VA.

Born January 14, 1943 in Babylon, NY, and reared in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late John Thomas McGuire and Marie Huebert McGuire.  John graduated from Holy Innocents High School, received his bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University, and furthered his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a Master of Library Science.

John was a Library Director and College Professor.  He was an avid sportsman and reader; a tireless advocate for co-workers; a former member of Kiwanis International; and following his move to Chincoteague Island, enjoyed lunch on Mondays at Manna Café, and his afternoon visits to McDonald’s.  Having grown up in Pittsburgh, John remained a longtime devoted fan, of the Pirates and Steelers.

In addition to his wife, Gretchen, to whom he was married on March 17, 1992, survivors include: their son, Casey Higgins McGuire of Chincoteague; his children Jeanine (her husband Rich, and daughter Alex) of Jacksonville, FL, Becky (her husband Brian, and daughter Bailey) of Mooresville, NC, John C. (his wife Debbie, son Johnny, and daughter Molly) of Center Township, PA, and their mother Stephanie Wendell of Wintersville, OH; his sisters, Helene Sparvero and her husband Ron, of Pottsville, PA, Noreen Snyder of Ambridge, PA, and their families; and countless friends and former students.

John’s family wish to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to all nurses, CNA’s, staff, and doctors at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Cancer Center for their kindness, attention and professional care provided to John, and shared with them.  The family also wishes to express their gratitude to Father Mike Imperial of St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church on Chincoteague for his attention and comfort.

A reception to celebrate John’s will be held at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church Social Hall, Church St., Chincoteague, VA, on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
