The Honorable N. Wescott Jacob, died peacefully, on April 13, 2015.

Judge Jacob was born July 11, 1925 in Onley, Virginia, a son of Margaret Wescott and William Custis Jacob.

Reared in Onley, he was graduated from Onancock High School, in Onancock, Virginia, at the age of fifteen.  He attended Woodberry Forest School for two post-graduate years, followed by undergraduate school at the University of Virginia.  Judge Jacob joined the Navy, attended officer training school in Chicago, attained the rank of LTJG, and served in the Pacific Theater during WW II.  He was aboard a ship in the Pacific preparing to invade Japan, when President Truman ordered the atomic bombing of that country, effectively ending the war.

Returning to the states post-war, Judge Jacob attended University of Virginia Law School, from which he was graduated in 1950.  After starting his law office in Onley, he later moved to Onancock, where he had a general practice for many years.

On April 12, 1952, he married Kate Spady Scott of Seaview, in Northampton County.  During their sixty-three year union, the couple lived in Onancock, and raised their two children, John Powell Jacob and Marion Scott Jacob.

In 1969, Judge Jacob was appointed to the Circuit Court bench in Accomack and Northampton counties, serving until 1992.  He followed in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Benjamin Wescott, who served as circuit court judge from 1922 until 1930.

In addition to his legal career and his family, Judge Jacob's passions in life were golf, boating, and growing roses.  He began golfing with his father as a young boy, and was instrumental in designing the golf course for the Eastern Shore Yacht and County Club.  His interests married when he adorned his outboard boat with a picture of a golf green, and named it "The 19th Hole".  His wife is a dedicated gardener, and he joined her in that hobby, specializing in growing their roses.

Judge Jacob was appreciated by his many friends for his hearty laugh, quick wit and sharp mind.  He was a member of the Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and treasurer for a number of years; the Lions Club; and the Eastern Shore Yacht and County Club, of which he was a founding member.

Jacob was predeceased by his parents and older brother, William Custis Jacob, Jr.  In addition to his wife and two children, he is survived by two grandsons, Allen Wescott Jacob and Scott Nottingham Jacob; and great-granddaughter, Katherine Jacob.

A graveside service will be held in the Jacob family burial lot at the Edgehill Cemetery, Accomac, Virginia, 9:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 16, 2015.  The memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m., at Holmes Presbyterian Church, Bayview, Virginia, in which the couple was married, and many generations of Mrs. Jacob’s family worshipped.  Friends are welcomed at both services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
