Mr. John Anthony “Nick” Nekunas, 76, husband of Lenora Nekunas and a resident of Parksley, VA, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 with his loving family at his side.

Born March 14, 1941 in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Anthony George Nekunas and Adele Karazia Nekunas.  Following high school, Mr. Nekunas joined the United States Coast Guard where he served his country for fifteen years, mastering his trade as an electrician and adopted the nickname, “Nick”.  Though his service ended, Nick continued to do what he loved, serving his community as a dependable electrician and as charter boat captain of the “Kelly Marie,” running fishing charters out of Quinby, VA and Onancock, VA.  Raised Catholic, Nick was a longtime member of Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.  He was a devoted and loving husband and father, and he especially adored his grandchildren and attending their sporting events, perhaps as much as he loved fishing.  Nick’s presence will be greatly missed by loved ones and his memory forever cherished.

In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, Nick is survived by his daughter, Kelly Nekunas Saunders and husband Worth; and grandchildren, Turner and Saylor, all of Parksley; nephews, Joe Balchunas and wife Bree, and John Balchunas and wife Jennifer; and great-nieces, Ellie and Katie, all of Florida; and many cousins and extended family members in New York.  Other than his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Marie Nekunas Balchunas and her husband, Joseph.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., with Father Rogelio L. Abadano and The Reverend Andy Cobb officiating.  Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Parksley Cemetery.  There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in Nick’s honor to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, P.O. Box 860, Onley, VA 23418.
