Mr. Oliver Ray "Ott" Carpenter, 86, husband of the late Margaret Davis Carpenter, and a longtime resident of Wachapreague, Va., passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the home of his daughter in Melfa, Virginia.

He was born on October 6, 1929 in Birdsnest, Virginia.  He was a son of the late Burley S. and Annie Katherine East Carpenter. Being raised on a farm, he truly loved the land. He prided himself on the vegetables he grew in his own back yard. His greatest joy came from sharing the ‘fruits’ of his labor with others, often carrying around a bag or two of freshly harvested goods to give to friends and family.  Ott was an incredible story teller, and there wasn’t a time you didn’t see him without a smile.

Survivors include his daughter, Claudia Carpenter Harmon and husband Ronnie of Melfa; a granddaughter Carrie Harmon DeLong and husband Matt; a great-granddaughter, Lillia Carrington DeLong, and a great-grandson, Levi Harmon DeLong all of Suffolk, Va.; three sisters, including Hattie Louise Powell of Cape Charles, Va.; and several nieces and nephews, including Kathy Merritt, Robert Powell, and Teresa Faesi.

A celebration of Ott’s life will be held at Onley United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Charles W. Parks III officiating. There will be a visitation at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Friday, February 12, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and at the church just prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Way of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 605, Onley, Va.  23418.

Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.
