Mr. Roger Reynold Smith, 82, beloved husband of Dorothy Lynch Smith, and a resident of New Church, Va., passed away Monday, November 16, 2015, at his home.

Roger was born October 3, 1933 in Norfolk, Va., to Eugene Coke Smith and Iva Edris Fox Smith.  Following his service in the United States Army, he earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from VPI.  Roger began his engineering career at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, moving to the Eastern Shore in 1963, to work for NASA.  During his time at NASA, he received many awards for his innovative contributions.  Most notably, Roger was responsible for designing the command destruct system for the Wallops Island base, and was presented with the Silver Snoopy award, recognizing his outstanding achievements.  He was also a talented builder and woodworker, a skill he inherited from his grandfather, and he enjoyed deer hunting.

In addition to his wife of nearly thirty-three years, he is survived by a daughter, Dana M. Penney and husband Donald of Hallwood, Va.; a son, Mark E. Smith of Merritt Island, Fla.; and a step-daughter, Sherry W. Sharpe and husband Mick of Melfa, Va.; four grandchildren, Allison and Erica Penney of Hallwood, Scott Snead of Melfa, and Brandon Guy of Parksley, Va.; a brother, Wallace Eugene Smith of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Bohmeir and husband Ron of Dade City, Fla.; brother-in-law, John Lynch and wife Judy of Virginia Beach, Va.; and two nieces, Sandi Siler of Chesapeake, Va., and Karen Crawford of Albany, Ga.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Barbara Parker officiating.  Interment will follow in the John W. Taylor Cemetery.  There will be a visitation at the funeral home, Friday, November 20, 2015, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market Street, Suite 3, Onancock, VA 23417.
