Shirley June (Charnock) Pruitt

Mrs. Shirley June Pruitt, 75, beloved wife of Wallace Smith Pruitt, and a resident of Salisbury, MD, formerly of Tangier Island, VA, passed away Monday, December 25, 2017.

Born September 22, 1942 to the late Vaughn Wesley Charnock and Virginia Lee Thomas Charnock, Shirley was a native of Tangier Island where she met and married, Wallace, the love of her life.  After they were married, Shirley and Wallace moved to Onancock, and she began her lifelong career and legacy of caring for others working at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore.  They later moved back to Tangier where Shirley continued to provide in home care for many, and along with Wallace, owned and operated Shirley’s Bay View Inn B&B, for nearly a decade.  Following retirement, Shirley and Wallace moved to Salisbury, where they have lived for the last several years.  Shirley was a Christian woman who was raised in the New Testament Church, and over the years, attended both New Testament and Swain Memorial United Methodist Church, and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Salisbury.  She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to all, who truly lived by her calling as a caregiver.  Her gracious heart and loving nature will be greatly missed.         

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, John Charnock and wife Faith of Tangier; numerous nieces and nephews, and their families; many special friends; and her dog, “Freckles,” whom she adored.  Other than her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Edward Vaughn Charnock. 

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., with The Reverend Robert Reinert and Mr. Denny Crockett officiating.  Interment will follow in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery.  There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. 

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore, 23610 North Street, Onancock, VA 23417.
