Wayne Matthews

Mr. Charles “Wayne” Matthews, 72, resident of Parksley, VA, passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. 

Born May 2, 1944 in Willis Wharf, VA, he was a son of the late Charles Joseph Matthews and Evelyn Taylor Matthews.  Wayne was a lifelong auto mechanic who specialized in small engine repair.  As a Ford and GM Certified Technician, Wayne was well-known for his skill to repair any motor, from diesel engines to lawnmowers.  He enjoyed fishing and a good western movie, loved animals, and attended Calvary Bible Church.  Above all else, Wayne adored his family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them.  

Survivors include his companion of thirty-nine years, Betty Lou Porter; son, Charles J. “Chuck” Matthews and wife Susan of Milford, OH; brother, David Brian Matthews and Frannie Bowden (and her son, Harley) of Bloxom, VA; sister, Betty Jo Colona and husband Norris of Federalsburg, MD; three grandchildren, Charles Joseph Matthews II, Joshua Brantley Matthews, and Joseph “Kelly” Ryan Roache; two great-grandsons, Anthony Wayne “Tony” Roache and Charles Joseph Matthews III; nephew, Keith Colona; niece, Christina Townsend and husband Yardley; four great-nephews, Dylan Matthews, Dontea Townsend, Nicholas Colona, and Chris Smullin; two great-nieces, Amber Matthews and Chelsey Townsend; one great-great niece, Adrianah Smullin; and former wife and dear friend, Joanne Wise.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Jo Roache; and niece, Angela Starr Widowson. 

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with The Reverend Keith Colona officiating.  Interment will follow in the Belle Haven Cemetery.  There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
