Life Legacy

Mrs. Martha Hayman Cowan, 95, beloved wife of Roy Cowan and a resident of Onley, VA, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley, VA.

Born August 22, 1918 in Kingston, NY, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Preston Hayman and Theresa Hart Hayman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her mother and father-in-law, Luther T. Cowan and Elizabeth Rogers Cowan; and her four siblings and their spouses, William Hayman (Evelyn), Helen H. Powell (Bill), Leo J. Hayman (Audrey), and Margaret H. Strubel (Jack); and her daughter, Jean M. Cowan.

In addition to her loving husband of sixty-six years, Roy, survivors include her daughter, Teresa “Teri” Daley and husband Kevin of Onancock, VA; a grandson whom Martha and Roy raised, Jesse T. Cowan of Concord, NC; five additional grandchildren, Craig L. Stevens and wife Ann of Great Falls, VA, Stephanie M. Cowan of Dundalk, MD, Elizabeth H. Daley of Richmond, VA, Brian L. Daley and wife Melissa of Onancock, and Christopher B. Daley and wife Julie of Riverview, FL; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Arianna, Hayden, Hannah and Emma; six step-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Martha was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Onley, since she and Roy retired back to his childhood home in Onley, in 1981. She was an avid bridge player, traveled extensively with her husband after they retired, but will be most remembered as a gentle and kind lady, who was most dedicated to her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted from St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., with Father Merlito Abiog officiating. A private interment will follow, in the Rogers and Cowan family lot, at Mount Holly Cemetery in Onancock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, P.O. Box 860, Onley, VA 23418, or to the Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center (RSRC) Activity Fund, 26181 Parksley Road, Parksley, VA 23421.
