Life Legacy


Col. Ret. William Long Nelson, 80, husband of Ellen Nock Nelson and a resident of "The Folly" on Folly Creek, Accomac, VA, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009, at his residence.

Born on June 25, 1929 in Grandview, WA, he was the son of the late Merritt Spencer Nelson, Mabel Elizabeth Long Nelson, and Betty "Lady" Nelson Turner.

Col. Nelson was a 1951 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, and upon graduation, continued a distinguished twenty-three year career 1951 - 1974 in the United States Air Force. He was a decorated fighter pilot and commander, having served in Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous awards and decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air Medal with twelve oak leaf clusters. He was also a member of the Drummondtown United Methodist Church in Accomac.

Other than his wife, survivors include five children, William L. Nelson, Jr. and his wife Colette of Accomac, Gussie Fauntleroy and her husband Dearing of Crestone, CO, Ginny Snyder and her husband Kurt of Bothell, WA, Sam Nelson and his wife Jackie of Chesapeake, VA, and Rick Nelson and his wife Amy of Holden Beach, NC; a sister, Virginia Nelson Tinnell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; six grandchildren, Kurt Snyder, Jr., Jennifer Snyder, Katy Snyder, Sarah Nelson, Mary Britt Nelson and Victoria Nelson; four nieces and six nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Drummondtown United Methodist Church on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Janet Grissett officiating. Interment will full military honors will follow the service at the Edgehill Cemetery in Accomac. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service.
