Life Legacy


Mr. Robley Jones Fletcher, Sr., 88, a resident of the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007 at Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Virginia.

Born February 5, 1919 in Horsey, Virginia, Mr. Fletcher was the son of the late Donald F. Fletcher, Sr. and Elodie Katherine Jones Fletcher. Having been born, raised, lived and worked in Horsey until moving to the Hermitage, Mr. Fletcher was President and owner of Donald F. Fletcher & Son, Inc. for over 50 years. He was also Postmaster of Horsey for 32 years before retiring from the Postal Service. He attended Fork Union Military Academy, the University of Alabama and Georgia Tech. During his lifetime, Mr. Fletcher served on many boards, Signet Bank for 29 years, NAM Hospital, and the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club. He was an honorary member of the Atlantic District Ruritan Club and lifelong member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Jenkins Bridge where he served as a member of the Vestry, Junior Warren, treasurer of the Sunday School, and a choir member. He also served his country as a Warrant Officer and pilot in the Army Air Corp.

Mr. Fletcher was predeceased by his wife, Laura Handy Merrill Fletcher and a brother, Dr. Donald F. Fletcher, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Sarah Katherine Fletcher Bingman and husband, Rick, of Belle Haven and Nancy Ellen Fletcher Bisker and husband, Bob, of Franktown; son, Robley Jones Fletcher, Jr. and wife, Justine, of Annandale, Virginia/Atlanta, Georgia; granddaughters, Alexandria Fletcher and Kelsey Bisker and a grandson, Robley Jones Fletcher III; brother-in-law, M. Burris Merrill of Pocomoke City, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, June 15, 2007 at 2:00 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Jenkins Bridge, by The Right Reverend Harry Crandall. Interment will follow at Taylor Cemetery in Temperanceville.

There will be a visitation at the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 - 4:00.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Kitchen Renovation Fund, in care of Benny Mason, 26095 Gladding Road, Mears, VA 23409.
