Life Legacy

Mr. George Roger Scoville, 75, and resident of Wachapreague, VA since 1985, formerly of Chappaqua, NY, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley, VA.

Born August 24, 1936 in Pala Alto, CA, he was a son of the late Chauncey Wilber Scoville and Helen Ruth Catlin Scoville. Mr. Scoville was graduated from the College of William and Mary; with graduate work at the University of Virginia; served his country in the United States Coast Guard, from which he retired as a Lieutenant; and was a comptroller in multinational chemical companies.

George traveled extensively before his retirement, including many moves throughout the United States as a child with his family and a three-year transfer to Brussels, Belgium in 1977. A dedicated employee, he found relaxation in woodland hikes, camping, fishing and racquet sports.

After he retired to the Eastern Shore in 1985, George enjoyed Shore life to the fullest. He was an avid fisherman, loved clamming, playing chess, auctions and the arts. He developed a passion for running, crowned by his completion of the Inaugural Bay-Bridge Marathon in 2002.

Most of all, “Walking George” loved to spend time with his friends everywhere on the Shore, especially at the old Wachapreague gas station on a hot summer day.

Survivors include two daughters, Eden Hart and her husband, Warren, of Catskill, NY, and Anne Hershey and her husband, Michael L., Jr., of Landenberg, PA; a brother, Wilber Edwin Scoville of Oshkosh, WI; two grandchildren, Merimon Hart and Connor Hershey; and the mother of his daughters, Sandra Ginn Keeney of Parksley, VA.

Friends are asked to join his family for a memorial gathering at The Island House Restaurant in Wachapreague on Saturday, June 23 from 1-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Eastern Shore’s Own Arts Center, P.O. Box 147, Belle Haven, VA 23306, Wachapreague Seaside Park, C/O Town of Wachapreague, P.O. Box 242, Wachapreague, VA 23480, or to the North Street Playhouse, 34 Market Street, Onancock, VA 23417.
