Elsie Chambers Jones, wife of the late Earle W. Jones and a resident of Exmore, VA, passed away Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore.
Born March 2, 1927 in Keller, VA, and reared in Exmore and Willis Wharf, VA, she was a daughter of the late Clifton Chambers and Sarah Mears Chambers. Mrs. Jones retired as a Psychiatric Charge Aide at Eastern State Hospital, and a former waitress at The Jefferson Restaurant, both located in Williamsburg, VA; and enjoyed gardening and reading.
Like many on the Eastern Shore, Elsie was a sucker for a low price and a long conversation. Fastidious and self-reliant, Elsie never wanted a handout and thought little of those who expected them. All she ever asked of life was a fair shake for herself and a better life for her children. Elsie worked a full-time job nobody wanted, and waited tables to supplement a very simple household. She retired and moved back to the Eastern Shore, choosing to live not far from where she was raised, Willis Wharf. She is survived by a sister Gloria Ann Parks, a brother Bobby (Carol), her son Arthur Thompson (Debra), her daughter Deborah Timberlake (Rick). Her extended family includes four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Elsie’s legacy is to remind all of us to strive to ensure a better life for your family, just getting them into the best schools is not the answer, teach your children to stand up straight, eat right and work hard. She will be missed by those who knew her.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Hampton Inn, in Exmore, VA, on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Foodbank of the Eastern Shore, P.O. Box 518, Onley, VA 23418.
