Herbert Barnes, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Herbert Barnes, Jr., 84, husband of the late Norma Adams Barnes for fifty-six years, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Herb was born on July 8, 1933, in Accomac, VA, to the late Herbert Barnes, Sr. and Katherine Martin Barnes.

Following his service in the United States Navy and graduation from Ohio University, Herb began his career in photography. He first worked as a studio photographer, then as a photo-interpreter, and finally as a photography specialist with the Central Intelligence Agency.  His work with the CIA took him to over fifty countries, including six months in Kinshasa, Zaire, three years in Athens, Greece, with the family, and two years in Istanbul, Turkey.

He spent his life pursing his hobbies and tinkering on his many projects. He was a private pilot and flight instructor. He restored five antique airplanes from bare metal to show-worthy prize winners. He enjoyed boating, fishing, carpentry, wildlife photography, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He and his wife, Norma, retired to his origins on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where they lived together for over twenty years.

Survivors include his three children, Cynthia Ruth Barnes and husband Raz Dan of San Jose, CA, Carol Barnes Chang and husband Hans Y. Chang of Fairfax, VA, and Charles Alan Barnes and wife Karen Ashbrook-Barnes of Vienna, VA; his sister, Virginia Barnes Price; and four grandchildren, James and William Chang, and Adele and Simon Barnes.  In addition to his wife, Norma, and parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Barnes Hornsby; and brother, James Daniel Barnes.

A gathering to celebrate Herb’s life will be held at the Island House Restaurant, 17 Atlantic Avenue, Wachapreague, VA, on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.
