James Matthew Haynes Obituary

James Matthew Haynes of Richmond, Virginia, died Thursday, July 4, 2019.  He was born in 1942, to the late Roy Wilson Haynes and Lena Sapere Haynes, in Norfolk, Virginia, where his father worked supporting the war effort.  He grew up in Richmond, was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, then joined the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.  Following military service, he attended Richmond Professional Institute (later VCU), and retired in 2000, from a career in nuclear power quality control.  Mr. Haynes was married, and is survived by a son, James Matthew Haynes, Jr. and his wife Meredith, and grandsons Jake and William Haynes, all of Richmond.

Mr. Haynes lived on Virginia’s Eastern Shore for many years. He taught his son to appreciate the bay and the ocean and how to fish.  He was a coach for Shore Little League, a member and past-president of Exmore-Belle Haven Lions Club, and had an extensive collection of Eastern Shore farm memorabilia.

After he retired, he returned to live in Richmond and enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s soccer and baseball games.  He also enjoyed traveling with his friend, Linda Groome.

A memorial gathering will be held in Richmond on Friday, July 12th at the Commonwealth Club, 401 W. Franklin Street, Richmond, VA  at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.  On Saturday, July 20th, his family will receive friends on the Eastern Shore at the Eastville Inn, 16422 Courthouse Road, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Monument Fund, PO Box 483, Charlottesville, VA  22902.
