Mrs. Joan Courtney Watson, 83, wife of the late George Melvin Watson and native of Onancock, VA, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. Born September 17, 1935 in Deep Creek, VA, she was a daughter of the late Preston Courtney and Della Ross Courtney.
Joan’s life revolved around serving others--occupationally, personally, and spiritually. After many years of public service, she retired from Accomack County Department of Social Services. As a longtime member of Onley United Methodist Church, Joan proudly dedicated her life to serving the Lord and her church. In addition, she served as treasurer of the Compassionate Friends of the Eastern Shore, a cancer support group, and was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her son, Steven Watson and wife Barbara of Bear, DE; brother, Barry W. Courtney and wife Frances of Onancock; two grandsons, Matthew Watson and wife Courtney, and Andrew Watson and fiancé Kristen; great-grandson, Beckham, who brought a special joy to her life since the day he was born; nephew, Keith Courtney and wife Kelly, and their children, Jacob and Olivia; niece, Barbara Anne Bernstein and husband Joe, and their son, Joey; and her sidekick and fur baby, “Missy”. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Jeff Watson; sister, Carolyn R. Courtney; and her beloved dog, “Snowball”.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Charles W. Parks III officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
