Mr. Kurt Carter Habel, 82, husband of Ethel Pace Habel and a resident of Pungoteague, VA, passed away on May 5, 2019 with his family by his side. Born March 3, 1937 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the only child of the late Karl Habel and Ruth Carter Habel.
As the longtime Assistant Director for the National Institutes of Health, Mr. Habel dedicated his life to protecting our nation through health research. Over the last three decades, Kurt and Ethel have called the Eastern Shore of Virginia their home, where they have enjoyed retirement and made countless memories with loved ones.
In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, he is survived by two children, Kyle C. Habel of Silver Springs, MD and Courtenay A. Habel of Onancock, VA; four grandchildren, Jerome Habel, Robert Palmer III, Melissa Palmer, and Jada Palmer; seven great-grandchildren, Maniyah Scott, Jayden Habel, Robert Palmer IV, Elijah Palmer, Jerimich Palmer, Nevaeh Palmer, and Skyler Howard; sister-in-law, Mary Rinehart and husband John, and their children, Kevin Nelson and wife Kim and Diedre Rinehart; family friend, Michelle Edwards and her children, Prettlophine, Sara, Linnya, Miyah, Liyah, and Malik; four great nieces; and two great nephews. Other than his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew, Gary Rinehart.
To honor Mr. Habel’s wishes, no public service will be held.
