Mrs. Anita Johnson Smith took her Lord and Savior’s hand as he led her home on Thursday, November 3, 2022 to the place he prepared for her beyond the beautiful early morning sunrise. Anita passed peacefully at her home, in Texaco Town, VA, with her loving husband and children at her side.
Born April 1, 1952 in Southside Chesconessex, VA, Anita was the daughter of the late Warner Ames Johnson and Beatrice Janie Thomas Johnson. A life defined by her infinite love for God and family, Anita was known for her dedication and selflessness to all. For many years, she greeted Accawmacke Elementary students and staff with a smile and a healthy meal as their cafeteria manager. Outside of work, Anita’s time and attention was devoted to her family and her church. Always eager to offer a hand in service to the Lord, Anita was often found lending her talents in the kitchen for any, and all, functions at Onley Baptist Church. Her presence there, at home, and among friends will be truly missed…until the day we meet again.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of nearly 54 years, Larry Thomas Smith; daughter, Glenda Smith McKay and her husband, Christopher, of Rocky Mount, VA; son, Larry Wayne Smith of Melfa and his fiancé, Christina Lynn Thornton of Pocomoke, MD; sister, Linda Jackson and her husband, Chester, of Parksley, VA; grandson, Benjamin Daniel Green; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Anita was predeceased by her sisters and brother, Peggy Wessells, Janie Fitchett, Dorothy “Dot” Rowley, Shirley Adkins, Betty Saunders, Barry Thomas “Ditty Mouse” Johnson; niece, Jeannie Smith; and nephew, David Lee Saunders.
A service in celebration of Anita’s life and faith will be held at the Onley Baptist Church on Friday, November 11, 2022 at 5:30 p.m., with The Reverend John Burr officiating. In honor and appreciation of the countless people who have been blessed by Anita’s gifted hands and generous heart, a meal will be provided in the church social hall following the service.
