Ascension Horchler Obituary

Ascension S. Horchler passed away peacefully in her home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on June 4, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Ascension was born on June 18, 1962 in Nîmes, France to Manual and Maria Rosa Sanchez. She was the oldest of three children. She had two younger brothers, José and Marc.

She attended the University of Montpellier (France) where she graduated with a Bachelor's in Nursing and a Master's in Midwifery. She worked as a nurse-midwife and was blessed to deliver many babies, which is a memory that she treasured all her life.

In France, she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was an active member the rest of her life. In her youth, she served a voluntary eighteen-month mission for her church in Seville, Spain.

She later moved to the United States where she continued her education attending Brigham Young University and receiving a B.A. and an M.A. in Languages.

She married the love of her life, Scott Allen Horchler, in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple. She had son, Christian, and daughter, Sophie, whom she adored.

She loved reading, swimming, doing family history work, and traveling. Her favorite places to be were the beach, the Temple, and in her home.

She taught languages at VCU and the University of Richmond, where she always enjoyed the company of those young minds. She loved working with youth and was able to serve in her church as a leader in both the Young Women’s and Primary organizations, and in her role as a Seminary teacher, she taught the Gospel to young adults. Her greatest and most important accomplishment was being a wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, a love for eternity, Scott; her son, Christian (Kendall); her daughter, Sophie (Brigham); her parents, Manual Sanchez and Maria Rosa Albuixech; brothers, José (Véronique) and Marc (Carine); sisters-in-law, Wendy Lane (David) and Stacy Eades; nieces, Anaïs, Hannah, and Sadie; and nephews, Samuel, Alexandre, Lucas, Adrien, and Maxim.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 5600 Monument Ave., Richmond, VA 23226. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., prior to the services at the church building. Burial will be at Westhampton Memorial Park immediately after the funeral service.
