Barbara Tilghman Obituary

Barbara Annie Tilghman, 80, of Melfa, VA, walked graciously into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 14, 2022 following a brave and hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Although her recorded birth date was June 4, 1941, Barbara was born at the family home, in Harborton, VA, on May 30, 1941 to the late Lawrence H. Stevens and Dorothy Hart Stevens.

Barbara grew up in Harborton and later relocated to Salisbury, MD, then Mardela Springs, MD, and finally to Millsboro, DE, before returning home to the Eastern Shore in 2014 when diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. With her relentless work ethic and an unwavering faith in the Lord, she led by example through her strength and courage. Barbara was saved in 1980 and remained a devoted Christian, spending countless hours reading her bible and writing and singing religious music.

She is survived by her children, Barbara A. Crockett of Melfa, Shirley M. Taylor of Exmore, VA, and Elton W. Taylor; brother, Lawrence “Sonny” Stevens Jr. and his wife, Etta, of Townsend, VA; grandchildren, Texena Crockett (Ryan), Jenny Taylor (Jason), Brian Bradford, Malista Ness, and Tuesday Taylor; son-in-law, Carrroll R. Bishop; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and her beloved pups, “Nana” and “Cindy.” In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Daniel Edward “Speck” Couch and Edwin K. “Ed” Tilghman; brothers, Roland, Hyden, Johnny, and James “Jim” Stevens; and son-in-law, Fred Wolf Crockett.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 4:00 p.m., with The Reverend Kenneth “Bo” Helms officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Private interment will be held at the Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron, MD.
