Bill Aigner

William Everett “Bill” Aigner, 71, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at his home in Melfa, VA. Born September 25, 1948 in Mechanicsville, VA, he was a son of the late Charles Edward Aigner, Jr. and Lois Alexander Aigner.

Bill was raised in Mechanicsville and graduated from Lee-Davis High School, where he led The Confederates football team to many triumphs as their co-captain. His performance on the field made school history. Although the Aigner family moved to the Eastern Shore soon after his graduation, the bond between his teammates and coach remained strong throughout their lives, and Bill was grateful for their friendships. He continued his education for another year until enlisting in the United States Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War. Upon discharge, Bill returned home to the Shore, raising his family and working for VDOT, then retiring as a supervisor in 2005, after more than 20 years.

As an avid fisherman and duck hunter, there were few places Bill would rather be than heading out of Wachapreague Inlet or into the marsh. Later, with Susie at his side, they spent many days fishing, clamming and enjoying the beaches of Cedar Island and Dawson Shoals, and all that this special place, the Eastern Shore, has to offer. Over the past several years, Bill and Susie discovered the sport of Pickleball. He was an avid player here in Virginia, or anywhere they happened to be. He made many wonderful friendships with his Pickleball pals. It was a special kind of camaraderie.

Bill so loved his children and grandchildren and nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered. Bill is survived by his soul mate and best friend of 13 years, Susanne “Susie” Erikson; his children, Johanna Aigner of Onley, VA, Kelly Hicks of Parksley, VA, William Aigner of Melfa, VA and Alexander “Alex” Aigner of Exmore, VA; brothers, Charles Aigner and his wife, Phyllis, of Cheriton, VA, John Aigner and his wife, Shari, of Locustville, VA, and Jay Aigner and his wife, Jaimie, of Wachapreague, VA; grandchildren, Dustin and his wife Carolin, Toby, Everett, Katie, Brandon, Christian, Kallie, Dylin, Jacob, and Nyla; great-grandson, Casey Beau; and many nieces and nephews. For all who knew him, his kind and generous spirit will never be forgotten.

There will be a private family service to honor Bill.
