C. Raymond Charnock, Sr. Obituary

Captain Charles Raymond Charnock, Sr., 85, saw his Pilot’s face as he ‘crost the bar’ to be reunited with his late wife, Janice Parks Charnock, on Sunday, May 8, 2022. A lifelong resident of Tangier Island, VA, Raymond was born November 24, 1936 to Charles Newman “Charlie” Charnock and Maggie Spence Charnock.

Like all true heroes, Raymond was as noble and kind as they come. Following high school, he served his country in the United States Army, returning home to Tangier upon honorable discharge. As a tugboat captain for Stewart Transportation and Vane Brothers for more than 36 years, Raymond was a well-respected, ‘old school’ waterman who could captain a tug like no other and never needed the latest and greatest navigation tools to find his way. He was a longtime member of Central Lodge No. 300 AF & AM and a member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church. Raymond’s smile and selfless generosity warmed the hearts of each life he touched and those who knew and loved him will be forever grateful to have shared this life with him.

He is survived by his children, Charlene Crockett and her husband, Jamie, Lisa Langley and her husband, Andy, and Raymond Charnock and his wife, Beth, all of Tangier; sister, Mildred Slusser of Richmond, VA; grandchildren: Nicole Wheatley, Marissa McCready, Jennie Langley, Beth Crockett (Shane), Drew Langley, and Anthony and John Charnock; great-grandchildren, Addison and Cayson Wheatley, Sullivan McCready, and Trypp, James, Ryan, Kate, Liam and Neal Crockett; as well as several nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the Charnock Family Cemetery on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., with Mr. Jerry Frank Pruitt officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tangier Volunteer Fire Department, c/o Duane Crockett, P.O. Box 239, Tangier, VA 23440 or simply take a page from Raymond’s book and help someone in need.
