Captain Bobby Cherrix

June 5, 1944 ~ January 11, 2022 (age 77)

Obituary

Mr. Robert Wayne “Captain Bobby” Cherrix, 77, of Wachapreague, VA, passed away at his daughter’s home in Melfa, VA on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 5, 1944 in Tasley, VA, he was the youngest and only son of five children born to the late Layman Albert Cherrix and Bertha Virginia Gardner Cherrix.

Bobby was a graduate of Onancock High School, class of 1962. Though he held many titles throughout his career, each were centered around his love for the water. As a young man, he began working as first mate to Captain Ray Parker, whose mentorship guided him to becoming captain of his own boat, the “Sea Fox.” After 40 years on the water, Bobby hung his charter hat, and started working in emergency maintenance for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel, where he retired after 11 years.

Bobby’s dedication to his family, along with his civic involvements and hobbies, kept him busy off the water. Over the years, he served his community as a member of the Wachapreague Guide Association, Wachapreague Volunteer Fire Company, and Central Shore Lions Club and was a longtime member of Ocean View United Methodist Church, having attended Broadway Baptist Church in recent years. He was a diehard Redskins fan, never missed a NASCAR race when Richard Petty was on the track, and western shows were his favorite past time. Of his many talents, Bobby was an exceptional singer and could build just about anything. His later years were filled with joy and adventure, as he spent a lot of time traveling with his fiancé, Margaret, and every spare second in between spoiling his grandchildren, all of whom were the greatest loves of his life.

Survivors include his fiancé and best friend of more than a decade, Margaret Baine; his loving children, Jenny Cobb and her husband, David, of Melfa, and Robbie Cherrix and his wife, Kahlan, of Accomac, VA; sister, Nancy Shorter of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Heather Vinnie (Kane), Tiffany Paul (Keith), Hayley Cherrix, Bobby Cherrix (Sam), and Austin Cherrix (Laura); and great-grandson, Kai Cherrix; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Thornes, Helen Carmine and Mildred “Mickey” Carmine; one niece; and one nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Michael Harrington officiating. Private interment will follow in the Wachapreague Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Though Bobby was well loved and cared for by all, his family would like to extend their gratitude to David Cobb, who cared for him limitlessly over the last two years, as well as special thanks to Lori Tittermary and the staff at Riverside Shore Hospice.
