Corey Monroe Salmon passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Corey had been a resident of Chesapeake, Virginia since 2003 but still considered the Eastern Shore and the town of Parksley “home.”
Corey spent his life helping others in many different ways. As a teen, Corey began serving in the Parksley Volunteer Fire Department. He spent years helping people during their greatest time of need, as both a first responder for fire and EMT calls, and through his work as a 911 dispatcher. Corey’s work in Chesapeake, while very different, was just as rewarding for him. He worked as a charter bus driver, and later as a safety manager for both Fun Tours and Venture. This work allowed Corey to travel, spend some time on the road, and meet so many people.
To know Corey was to love Corey and to always laugh! Corey had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke and an even better prank! He was affectionately known by friends on the Eastern Shore as “Flounder.” Many may remember his time as a radio DJ and sports reporter, “Flounder, the Sports Dude.” Corey’s love of sports, especially baseball, led him to coach for many years at Nandua High School and for a travel ball team. He LOVED the sport of baseball and cheering for his beloved Atlanta Braves. Corey enjoyed so many things—golf, NASCAR, pulling those slot machine handles at any casino, and placing bets on the horses.
Corey’s greatest love and accomplishment was his family. His move to Chesapeake led to marriage and starting a family. Corey is survived by his wife of 17 years, Tina; his 16 year old son, Noah; and his loyal yellow lab, Brody. His favorite thing was time spent with Tina and Noah, just doing the simple things—an afternoon drive to grab ice cream, watching Christmas Vacation to start the holiday season every year, driving around nearby neighborhoods to look at Christmas lights, and vacationing in the Outer Banks every summer. Corey loved introducing Noah to what he called “good music” which included Pink Floyd, Journey, and the Eagles.
Corey is also survived by a brother, Christopher Contreras. He was predeceased by his mother, Anne Hope Contreras (Shreaves); stepfather, Luis Contreras; and grandparents, Irving and Audrey Shreaves.
A service to celebrate Corey’s life will be held at the Parksley Volunteer Fire Company on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., with Mr. George Fulk officiating.
