Obituary

Dorothy Leslie “Dodie” Steele, of Onancock, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2023, at her daughter’s home in Norfolk.

Born July 29, 1960, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Ethan Allen III and the late Marilyn Floyd. She was the adopted daughter of the late Dorothy Watson. Dodie remained true to who she was throughout her life and never had a problem telling it like it was.

Before moving to the Eastern Shore, Dodie proudly served in the United States Army. Upon moving to the Shore, she was an ambulance driver. She moved on to retail and in recent years she made her way to work at Trident Tackle, where she got to know and enjoy the fishermen of Wachapreague along with their stories.

Dodie loved the Eastern Shore and was grateful for the many friends she made over the years. Dodie was also a beloved member of the ESO Arts Center Community. Many students were lucky to be helped by her during a “quick change” or have her be an ear for support.

Family was the most important thing to Dodie and her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Holiday gatherings, at any time of year, brought her much joy as she relished the togetherness of the people she loved the most. Dodie loved food and enjoyed cooking as much as eating. She rarely went a day without a little TV time and listening to her favorite tunes, preferably the Beatles and most music from the 60s & 70s.

She leaves to honor her life and spirit, her husband of 40 years, Craig Duane Steele; children, Joshua Steele (Amber) of Chesapeake, Jessica Steele (Daniel) of Norfolk, and Jacob Steele (Ellen) of Onancock; grandchildren, Noah, Emma, Sullivan, and Adalynn; sister, Dana Floyd (Bill) of Belle Haven; nephew, Joe Floyd (Nicola) of Matthews, NC, children, Jon, Jayden and Jack; Dodie also leaves behind many close friends and extended family members.

Just as Dodie would have wanted, family and friends will gather for a party in celebration of her life. Please come as you are, preferably wearing tie-dye. Dodie loved the ocean and sun beaming on her face, the date, time, and location of her celebration will be announced once the weather warms up.

Donations in Dodie’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.
