Elaine Borufsen Obituary

Elaine Audrey Borufsen, 91, of Parksley, VA, and formerly of New Jersey, died peacefully at Shore Health & Rehab on January 7, 2026.

Born August 7, 1934, in Asbury, NJ, Elaine was the daughter of Charles A. Mills and Elmira Ruth Mills.

A woman of deep faith and formidable resolve, Elaine and her husband, Oscar, built their family on a foundation of hard work, service, and devotion to the Lord. While raising their sons, Dennis and Dewey, in New Jersey, Elaine ensured they were cared for in every sense. Always independent, she worked at Hobart Industries as a computer programmer. She served as a Sunday School teacher and Boy Scout Den Mother in Monmouth County, guiding young minds with equal measures of patience and conviction.

After retirement, Elaine and Oscar relocated to their little slice of Heaven, the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Together they joined the Accomack-Northampton Car Club. The couple loved going to races or watching Elaine’s favorite movie, "The Longest Trailer," starring Lucy and Desi. Following Oscar’s passing, Elaine proved once again that self-reliance was second nature—tackling daily chores, including lawn mowing, with fearless determination, much to the peril of unsuspecting tree stumps and overgrown branches. She also opened her heart (and pantry) to countless stray cats who found their way to her door.

Small in stature but mighty in spirit, Elaine was famously feisty. She revved her engines with enthusiasm and peeled out to racetracks where she was known for cheering the loudest—and debating the judges with unapologetic vigor. Once ejected from the pits at Wall Stadium Speedway, legend has it her voice carried clear above the roar of engines and the crowd alike. She found great joy in debates with strangers and friends alike. Diminutive in size but never in presence, she will be fondly remembered for her sharp wit, lively opinions, and indomitable spunk.

Elaine is survived by her children, Dennis L. Borufsen and his wife, Rose Ann, of Brick, NJ, and Dewey D. Borufsen and his wife, Patricia, of Parksley, VA; nieces, Carol Richert and Linda Bartholomew; and dear friends, Josephine Phillips and Linda Young.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Lowell Borufsen.

Per Elaine’s wishes, no public service will be held.
