George Baker Obituary

George Winfred Baker Jr., affectionately known as “Ohio” to his friends and family, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Horntown, VA, at the age of 60. Born on July 8, 1964, in Cincinnati, OH, George was the beloved son of George Winfred Baker Sr. and Mary Lou Baker.
A devoted family man and a tireless worker, George lived a life marked by dedication and resilience. When his son faced serious health challenges as a young child, George was by his side, practically living at the hospital until his son turned three. During those difficult years, George worked tirelessly—seven days a week, year-round—to provide for his family and manage the daunting hospital bills. His dedication and selflessness set him apart.
Known for his strong work ethic, George built a well-earned reputation as a roofer and tree remover—a true blue-collar man who took pride in working with his hands. When he did manage a rare day off, he could be found cheering on his Cincinnati Bengals in the living room or watching Dale Earnhardt cross the finish line, savoring each victory lap. A true nature lover at heart, George enjoyed sitting in the woods hunting a big buck or on the river fishing for a catfish. He was a true patriot and was proud to be an American. But what he was most proud of was being a husband and father to his sons. He would give the shirt off his back if it would make someone’s life easier. That was just the type of guy he was. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of over 30 years, Nancy Elizabeth Baker, of Hagerstown, MD; son, Benjamin Winfred Baker and his fiancé, Harley Wenner, of Hagerstown, MD; stepson, William Joseph Slattery Jr. and his wife, Crystal Slattery, of Hagerstown; sister, Mary Gay, of Hillsboro, OH; brother, Joseph Baker and his wife, Amy Baker, of Aiken, SC; grandchildren, Aaleyah Baker, Mischa Slattery, Jasmine Neal, and Memphis Neal; and three nieces and one nephew. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary Lou Baker.
Per his request, no public service will be held.
