George Davis Obituary

George Wesley Davis, age 94, went to his eternal home on Friday, March 22, 2024. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Virginia Lee Brittingham Davis, and is survived by two daughters, Martha Lee Davis Floyd (Thomas) and Diane Marie Davis Cole (Tom); three grandchildren, Mary Ellen Cole Hasenfus (Ryan), Shelby Nicole Floyd Holden (Bobby), and Christine Marie Cole Buttenshaw (Zack); three great-grandchildren, Tucker Lucas Hasenfus, Sophia Paige Hasenfus, and Bennett Floyd Holden; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, the Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Hardin Davis and Ellen Gray Wright Davis, and his twin sisters and their husbands Raye Davis Powell (Jack) and Faye Davis Wilkerson (Gray).

George worked in accounting for 33 years for Export Leaf Tobacco Company, later Brown & Williamson. George was born in Richmond, VA, and grew up moving around to various church localities while his father, a Methodist minister, served several charges in Virginia, Georgia, and Colorado. He received a diploma from Ferrum Junior College during his father’s tenure as president there. George and Virginia were married at Market Street Methodist Church in Virginia’s hometown of Onancock, VA. George loved to drive and enjoyed camping and spending time boating, crabbing, and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River with his family. He and Virginia were members of the Sundowners Sams and Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Clubs and enjoyed over 30 years of camping with friends across the United States and Canada, travelling to every state except Hawaii and most providences of Canada. George was a long-time resident of The Hermitage at Cedarfield.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Westhampton United Methodist Church, 6100 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23226. Interment will be private at Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock.
