Gerald Linwood “Gerry” Sellars passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025. He was 91 years old. The family is deeply saddened and even though his health had been slowly failing these last few years, we were still shocked by his sudden death. Gerry was born on August 16, 1933.
Gerry is survived and missed by his loving wife Mary of 40 years; his children, Stephen and his wife Debbie, Cheryl and her husband Rolf, and Keith; stepsons, Rick and his fiancé Heather and Blair; sisters, Diane and her husband, Howard, and Lyn and her husband, Buck; and brother, Ray and his wife, Terry. He lost his beloved son, John, to cancer in 2011. Gerry also will be missed by his eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Gerry was born and raised in the Richmond, Virginia suburbs. He spent time in the Army, serving in Germany and then moved to the Northern Virginia area. While in Northern Virginia, Gerry spent his younger days raising his family and working for AT&T, where he later retired. Gerry was an exceptional youth baseball coach and often spoke about how much he loved coaching baseball. For nearly two decades, he inspired and mentored hundreds of young baseball players, helping them become the best they could be in sports and in life. Many of those players have reached out to tell stories about how Coach Sellars helped change their lives for the better and what a genuinely nice person he was.
Following Gerry’s retirement, he and Mary moved to Parksley, Virginia. They enjoyed life on the Chesapeake Bay, spending their days fishing, boating, golfing, gardening, and playing with their beloved dogs.
Gerry was never afraid to take on projects or visit new places. He loved traveling and cruising around the world with friends and enjoyed watching friends play music. He loved making new friends and exploring the world. He did everything with honesty and a smile on his face. Gerry might even be called an adventurer; he became a wonderful storyteller in his later years based on his full life and all the adventures he had. He was well liked by everyone, mostly due to his positive energy and the smile he would give you when he saw you coming. He would do anything he could for his family and his friends when they needed help.
There are no words that can express how grateful and blessed we are to have been his children, his brother and sisters, his wife and his friends.
Gerry's family will gather privately to celebrate his life.
