Henry Berger Obituary

Henry Francis Berger, 84, of Gulf Port, FL, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024, with his beloved wife of 66 years and his daughter at his side. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 22, 1939, he was the son of the late Henry and Johannah Berger.

Henry was a graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School where he played football. He was a United States Navy Veteran and a retired Lab Technician. Henry was a nature and animal lover, enjoyed going to the beach and collecting seashells, and was often found on the green swinging a golf club.

Henry, known as Frank by loved ones, adored his family and always went above and beyond for them, especially his beloved wife, Marie (Radovan). Soon after they were married, Henry was drafted into the Navy, where he served his country as a deckhand aboard the USS Yosemite. Upon honorable discharge in 1962, he returned home and together he and Marie began building their beautiful love story and brought three amazing children into the world, Michael, Peter, and Christine. For many years, Henry worked tirelessly for Ciba-Geigy Corp. in Toms River. Though many of his workdays stretched into nights, he knew his sacrifice provided a happy life and a beautiful home for his family. Henry, with the guidance and partnership of Marie, made their home warm and welcoming to all who visited. His attention to detail came in handy for painting and wallpapering, hanging Christmas lights, or having the perfect daisies growing alongside the fence in the backyard. The Bergers resided in their Point Pleasant home, “Crestview,” for more than 40 years, where they shared precious memories of planting gardens, swimming in the pool, birthday parties, holidays, BBQs, and countless family dinners gathered around the dining room table. These cherished times are what brought love, laughter, and beauty throughout the good times, the hard times, and everything in between.

The love grew even more after the births of his grandchildren, Courtney, and Michael, followed a few years later by Brett, Alec, Jack, Madison, and Mackenzie. Poppy, as he was affectionately called, was a devoted grandfather and some years later great-grandfather, with the arrival of Morgan, Melody, Makayla, Cruz, and Addalynn. Poppy would be found at baseball games, hockey games, dance recitals, and even the occasional amusement park. No matter what the event, or what his grand and great-grandchildren needed, their Poppy was their biggest supporter and greatest fan.

Upon Henry’s retirement, the Bergers moved from New Jersey and settled in Gulf Port, where he enjoyed the life of endless beaches, shell searching, walks to the pier, playing bocce, and occasionally winning a game of 500 card Rummy against Marie. Henry enjoyed playing rounds of golf, as well as cheering on his favorite teams, the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Giants.

Henry is survived by his loving wife, Marie; son, Michael; daughter, Christine; son-in law, Mark; daughter-in-law, Denise; sister, Marilyn (George); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; as well as many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his beloved in-laws; sister, Joan; and son, Peter.
