Ivan Earl Cummings

October 25, 1957 ~ April 21, 2022 (age 64)

Obituary

Ivan Earl Cummings, 64, husband of Annmarie Vaughn “Ann” Cummings and a resident of Onley, VA, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, VA. Born October 25, 1957 in Charleston, SC, he was the son of Janice Canady Oxendine of Southport, NC and the late Bonferlon Cummings.

Ivan served his country in the United States Navy for nearly a decade, where his military assignments and training became instrumental to his future career as a heavy equipment operator for VDOT and the Accomack County Landfill. Though working and providing for his family was of most importance to Ivan, Sundays were reserved for family, football, and NASCAR. Ivan was a diehard Washington Redskins fan and didn’t miss a race when Jeff Gordon’s #24 was on the track, both of which he typically enjoyed with a Natty or Genny Light in hand. Each Sunday he would take one of his kids on an outing, riding the back roads until they hit water and stopping for soda and candy…as long as they didn’t tell mom. Ivan’s affinity for riding continued even after the kids grew up. He looked forward to traveling to visit family in North Carolina, New York, and Connecticut, and there wasn’t an ESVA back road he hadn’t explored, often stopping at the water to watch the birds.

In addition to his wife and mother, Ivan is survived by his children, Benjamin Joynes (Jackie) of New London, CT, Ivan E. Cummings, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Katherine Faye “Katie” Tatum of Salisbury, MD, Ashley Nicole Padgett of North Carolina, Courtney Marie Hart (Dereck) of Keller, VA, Jonathan Ralph Cummings (Erica) of Parksley, VA, and Ivania Renee Cummings of Onley; sister, Jerolyn “Mamie” Schaffer (Cliff); brother, Ferlon “Ray” Cummings, grandchildren, Antonio, Freddie, Indiana, Eli, William, Bryan, Tyler, Katelyn, Brayden, Aniyah, MJ, Nevaeh, Ashton, Buddy, Ethan, Leah, Melody, and Joseph; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He also leaves behind his dogs and cat, Bud, Scrappy and Angel, who he adored even though he would often deny it. Other than his father, he was predeceased by his daughter, Monica Bagwell.

Visitation will be held at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Monday, April 25, 2022 from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m., followed by a graveside service at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. with his brother-in-law, The Reverend Cliff Schaffer, officiating. In true Ivan spirit, the family requests all to please come as you are.
