Dr. James B. “Jim” Much, Jr., 86, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Friday, November 18, 2022 at his home in East Point, Onancock, VA, in the comfort and care of his wife, Diane Much.
Jim met the love of his life, Diane, through a mutual friend. Though their romance began near their homes at the Jersey Shore, their adventurous life together took them to New York, Massachusetts, and Block Island, RI, prior to settling on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
A man of strong faith, Jim dedicated many years to caring for his beloved mother and other family members. He was an enthusiastic and inspiring educator who greatly valued learning, and impacted countless students as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. One of his favorite assignments was teaching at the Eastern Shore Community College in Melfa, VA. Over the years, Jim managed the construction and renovation of numerous houses, and he was an avid fisherman and restorer of vintage boats and classic cars. A gifted writer, Jim crafted beautiful poems and was often called upon to prepare tributes for weddings and funerals of those dear to him. Among his collection of literary works are the heartfelt wedding vows he wrote, words that stayed true to Jim and Diane throughout their 51 years of selfless love and dedication to one another.
Jim is survived by his wife, Diane; their beloved daughter, Wendy Crawford and her husband, Callum; grandchildren, Fiona, Ruby, and Rory Crawford; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He touched the hearts of many friends, all of whom were like family and dearly loved their “Uncle” Jim. He was predeceased by his parents, James B. Much and Elsie Smith Much and his sister, Betty Jane Dreager.
The family will gather privately to celebrate Jim’s life. Should friends desire to honor Jim, please do so through acts of kindness and showing genuine compassion to others.
