Maria Sanchez Obituary

Maria Angelica Sanchez, of Painter, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on February 28, 1936, in Matamoros, Mexico, Maria was raised in a home filled with warmth and strong family values. From a young age, she dreamed of becoming a mother—a dream she fulfilled with love and dedication, raising six children who were the pride of her life.

Affectionately known as "Gela" to her family, Maria spent most of her life in Mexico before moving to the United States in her 60s to be closer to her children and grandchildren. In a testament to her strength and determination, she proudly became a U.S. citizen five years ago.

Maria was known for her quick wit and vibrant sense of humor, a gift she passed on to the generations who followed. She enjoyed simple pleasures—sharing meals at the Sage Diner in Onley, VA, treating herself to well-deserved pampering, and always presenting herself with grace and care. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome and loved.

A devout Catholic, Maria was a faithful member of Saint Charles Catholic Church, where she found comfort and guidance in her faith. She spent countless hours in prayer and reading her Bible, always seeking to walk in God’s light and let His word shape her life.

Her greatest joy came from being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maria was the heart of her family—a source of wisdom, laughter, and unconditional love. Though she left her beloved Mexico to be near her family, she carried her homeland in her heart always. Her final resting place will be in the land of her birth, a place rich in heritage and memories.

Maria is survived by her children, Rosalba, Octavio, Luis Alberto, Laura, Jorge, and Sandra; siblings, Jose and Javier, of Matamoros, Tamaulipas; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Antonia Muñoz Reyna, and siblings, Ricardo and Maria de la Luz.

She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted at Saint Charles Catholic Church in Cape Charles, VA, on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., with Father Michael Imperial officiating. Viewing and visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Memory tributes may be shared with the family at www.williamsfuneralhomes.com.
