Marion Joyce “Tots” Fread, 82, of Canton, Ohio, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at her son’s residence in East Point, Virginia. Born December 6, 1937, in Accident, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Leah (Opel) Beitzel, and was the last surviving of eight siblings.
In the final weeks of her life, she was surrounded by the love of her sons and grandchildren, and her cat, Frederico. Her strength and determination remained steadfast up to her final hour with us.
Marion left her hometown after high school and spent most of her adult life in Canton, Ohio. She was a strong figure in both her family and community. She was a proud mother to her children Andy, Ann, Diane, and Robert, as well as a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Prior to retiring several years ago, she held numerous positions throughout her career, ranging from switchboard operator at Hercules Motors, to secretary and dispatcher at Midwest Paving, to office supervisor for Wayne Dalton Door Company. Post-retirement, she remained a dedicated and steadfast supporter of her community. She was an avid volunteer and treasurer for Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO), her neighborhood community association, and the local elementary school. Her mission to help others manifested itself into every aspect of her life.
She is survived by her two sons, Andrew and Robert, twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Tots will be laid to rest at her family’s cemetery in Accident, Maryland, alongside her brother, Carroll “Jack” Beitzel, who passed away just one month prior to her. The funeral and memorial services are to be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Marion’s last wish was for everyone to plant a pink rose bush in their yard “for love, because the world needs more love”.
