Mary Peterson Hartzler, a resident of Commonwealth Senior Living at the Eastern Shore in Onancock, Virginia, formerly of Alexandria, Virginia, died January 17, 2025. She was 93 years old. Born on May 10, 1931, in Hinsdale, Illinois, she was the only child of Albert James Peterson and Olga Kaney Peterson. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Alfred James Hartzler. She is survived by her son, Peter, and his spouse.
A lifelong champion for equality, Mary dedicated herself to advancing civil rights and ensuring fair opportunities for women. Her passion fueled her involvement in numerous national and local organizations, as well as political movements aimed at securing justice and fairness. She would want all to know that the fight for women’s rights and equality remains unfinished.
Mary’s life was a testament to the power of commitment, resilience, and hope for a better future.
