Mary McIhenny Mitchell, 82, wife of the late Captain Richard Floyd Mitchell, USN, Retired and a resident of Commonwealth Senior Living at the Eastern Shore in Onancock, VA, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021. Born May 23, 1939 in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late Admiral Harry Haywood McIhenny, USN, Retired and Regina Denniston McIhenny.
Mary received her bachelor’s degree in education from Marymount College in New York City, NY. She was a devout Catholic, an avid tennis player and loved animals. Her role as a wife and mother brought her the most joy and contentment in life, and she cherished every moment spent with her family.
She is survived by her sons, Mike Mitchell of Hampton, VA, David Mitchell and his wife, Linda, of Pungoteague, VA, and Jay Mitchell and his wife, Julie, of Roswell, GA; sister, Patricia Fowler of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Zachary, Cecilia, and Hunter Mitchell; nephew, Cary Fowler; and niece, Kathy Fowler.
The family will gather privately to celebrate Mary’s life.
