Richard Mitchell Obituary

Richard Zachary “Zack” Mitchell, 24, of Pungoteague, VA, passed away the evening of Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Born on February 29, 2000, in Virginia Beach, VA, he was the beloved son of David and Linda Mitchell.

Zack was a bright and spirited young man with a passion for physical fitness and martial arts. Whether he was boxing, practicing martial arts, or engaging in other forms of exercise, he embraced fitness as a vital part of his daily life. He attended Broadwater Academy until the 9th grade before transferring to Nandua High School. Zack then pursued higher education at James Madison University for two years until the pandemic brought him back home to Pungoteague.

Known for his sharp wit and clever humor, Zack brought laughter and joy to his family, especially during their many travels together. He cherished the time spent exploring nature, from the desert in Palm Springs, CA, to the red rocks of Sedona, AZ, to the beaches of the Eastern U.S. and the breathtaking landscapes of Canada. A well-traveled soul, Zack treasured every adventure he shared with his parents.

In his professional life, he tried out many trades from working in restaurants, on the crew of a solar panel installation company, working as a waterman, to working at his father’s custom home construction company. In his free time, Zack was an accomplished gamer, known for his quick jokes while playing Fortnite, World of Warcraft, or the many other PlayStation games he enjoyed so much.

Zack attended St. George’s Episcopal Church in Pungoteague, VA, where he found spiritual guidance and comfort.

Zack was, without a doubt, one of the best friends anyone could ask for. His unique personality made him the life of the party, and he took pride in not fitting into any mold. A Saturday night for Zack included great friends, some loud music, a lot of laughter, and, for a time, the infamous green Prius. As one friend described, he had an unmatched ability to "command the energy around him like no other man.”

Zack leaves behind a deep void in the hearts of those who loved him, along with many unanswered questions. His passing is a poignant reminder to always be kind, as we never know the struggles others may be facing.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, David and Linda Mitchell; grandparents John and Lois Chudzinski of Winter Haven, FL; uncles and aunts, Jay Mitchell (and wife, Julie) of Atlanta, GA, Mike Mitchell of Hampton, VA, Joe Reynolds (and wife Marina) of Cape Coral, FL, Mark W. Reynolds (and wife, Leslie) of Emerald Isle, NC, and Mark L. Reynolds (and wife Lori) of Williamsburg, VA; aunt, Patricia Fowler of Virginia Beach, VA; cousins, Sarah Reynolds of Emerald Isle, NC, and Cecilia and Hunter Mitchell, of Atlanta, GA; other family members including Cary Fowler and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Kelly and Mary Beth of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kathy Fowler and her husband, Keith Collison, of Norfolk, VA; and Zack will also be missed by many dear friends.
