Robert Golden “Butch” Klemeyer Jr., of Onancock, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2025, in Parksley, VA, following a brief illness.
Born on September 9, 1940, in Washington, D.C., Butch was the son of Robert Golden Klemeyer Sr. and Anna Moore Klemeyer. In his younger years, he spent summers in Stone Harbor, NJ, as an outboard technician and racing boats. A devoted car enthusiast, especially in classic BMWs, he could often be found in the garage, repairing or restoring vehicles.
Butch attended Penn State for a time before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea as part of the peacekeeping force. After his military service, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University. Butch met his wife, Ann, in Philadelphia. The couple lived in Point Pleasant, NJ, then Fairfax, VA, before settling in Sarasota, FL, where they raised their two children.
Butch worked for 27 years as Director of Facilities at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, a role he held with pride and dedication until his retirement. In 2018, he moved to Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where he enjoyed the peace of the countryside, tending to his yard and endlessly tinkering with engines.
Butch is survived by his children, Candice Gough and husband, Ben, of Sarasota, FL, and Robert "Butch" Klemeyer and wife, Lisa, of Siesta Key, FL; sister, Katherine McCauley of Cave Creek, AZ; grandchildren, Sydney Gough, Logan Gough, Anna Klemeyer, Kara Klemeyer, and Lily Klemeyer and a host of extended family members and friends.
Family and friends are welcome to honor Butch’s life at an open house at 3 Sturgis Street, Onancock, VA 23417, on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Bill McClung officiating.
