Stewart Revell Custis, 46, of Wilmington, North Carolina, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Born February 10, 1976, he was the oldest son of William S. and Lola Ruediger Custis of Onancock, Virginia. Stewart graduated from Broadwater Academy, then attended the University of Richmond where he received a B.S. degree in Accounting and Finance. His career as a Certified Public Accountant began in Richmond and he continued his accounting and finance career in Wilmington with Bruin & Associates.
Growing up, Stewart’s love for sports was evident as he was an active athlete, excelling in his accomplishments on both the baseball field and basketball court. His love for sport grew as he became older, expanding to just about anything that contained competition. As with most native Shoreman, the sight of water, whether the Bay, the Creek or the Ocean, brought him peace and joy. In his last years, his passions included his love for cooking and spending time with his loving wife, Candice Buckland Custis, who credits Stewart with being the light of her life.
In addition to his parents and wife, Stewart is survived by his three children, Michael, Hannah and Alexa of Richmond, Virginia; a brother, John P. Custis and his wife Abbi, and their three sons, Baker, Winn and Mapp; mother-in-law, Sandra Buckland; father-in-law, Donald E. Buckland and his wife Mary S. Buckland; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and their families.
A private family interment will be held.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that memorial donations in Stewart’s memory be made to Shore History (formerly the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society), P.O. Box 179, Onancock, VA 23417 (www.shorehistory.org/donate-1); Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
