Mrs. Sylvia Faye Godwin Whitmore, 78, wife of the late Ronnie Eugene Whitmore and a resident of Gargatha, VA, formerly of Smithfield, VA, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. A native of Sanford, VA, Sylvia was born on October 15, 1942 to the late John Nathan Godwin and Irene White Godwin.
Always on the go, Sylvia kept busy through her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother, as an active member of Hallwood Baptist Church, and traveling. She especially enjoyed trips to Pennsylvania and North Carolina, and for many years, she spent countless hours sewing and crocheting gifts for friends and family. Sylvia cherished time spent with family and adored her teacup poodle, “Lexie,” all of whom will greatly miss her.
Survivors include her loving children, Tana Miles Brittingham of Smithfield, Lou Ann Burkhead and her husband, David, of Gargatha, Anita Burkhead of Parksley, VA, and Shari Gary and her husband, Jerry, of Smithfield; sisters, Louetta Gibbons of Onancock, VA, Ann Pruitt of Pocomoke City, MD, and Roberta Chance of Sanford; grandchildren, Autumn and Austin Brittingham and Mackenzie and Olivia Burkhead; special friend, Dallas “Butch” Thomas of Pocomoke City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Peggy Miller and Johnny N. Godwin, Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the John W. Taylor Memorial Cemetery on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Danny Shrieves officiating.
