Thomas Wright Obituary

Thomas Essex Wright went home to the Lord on Friday, February 2, 2024, where he was welcomed by the open arms of his Savior and his wife, Joan, just in time to celebrate his 86th birthday. Born February 3, 1938 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, he was the only child of the late Thomas Eugene Wright and Dana Johnson Wright.

Tom, Sr. owned and operated Wright Construction, a successful structural repair business he built from the ground up with his son, Tom, Jr. Prior to his construction business, he dabbled in sales, but his real passion was being a part of the Norfolk Police force in the 70’s. A devoted family man, Tom cherished his wife, Joan, until her end. He was dedicated to passing on his family history and kept his ancestors alive through stories and mementos. A collector of many things, he was particularly enthusiastic about his gun collection. As a faithful Christian, he made many mission trips to both Africa and Costa Rica. Tom was a lover of life, always full of humor and had a great sense of adventure. Although he had Alzheimer’s for many years, his wit remained intact, often cracking jokes and making those around him smile and laugh. He loved sitting on his front porch in Waterlily, "watching the world go by."

1 Corinthians 9:25 reads, “His crown will last forever.” Though he will be dearly missed, Tom will live on through his children all of whom will carry and pass on their many memories to future generations ensuring his crown is eternal.

Tom was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Joan Garmon Wright; and his shining light, granddaughter, Savannah Lewis. To continue his legacy he leaves his children, Lisa Childress and her husband, Charles, of Kitty Hawk, NC, Tom Wright and his wife, Terri, of Virginia Beach, VA, John Wright and his wife, Jale, of Norfolk, VA, Heather Donis of Virginia Beach, VA, and Kristen Boyd and her husband, Justin, of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Henry Donis, London, Isla, and Locklend Boyd, Jesse and Brittany Ewing, and Bart Lewis; and great-grandchildren, Dani Lynn and Devin Ewing, Keira and Kenzie Raschdorf, Scarlett Lewis and Patricia Wright; and great-great grandson, Karter Nelson.

The family invites all to join them as they lay Tom to rest on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, in Onancock, VA and as they celebrate Tom’s life at Freedom Fellowship, 836 Regency Drive, Virginia Beach, on Monday, March 4, 2024 at 4:00 p.m., with The Reverends Rick Hocker and Ethan Drum officiating. Stories and memories will be welcomed, along with lots of laughter amongst the tears.
