Dallas DeWitt Swan, Jr., died on August 19, 2016, at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, Va.  He was born in Manhattan, NY on November 4, 1932.  He grew up in Garden City, NY with his parents Dallas D. and Olivia Buranelli Swan, and his sister Cynthia Swan Klemenger, who have all predeceased him.  As a youth, Dallas spent summers on the Swan family farm in Tecumseh, Nebraska.  After graduating from Adelphi University, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Korea for 19 months.  Following his time in the Army, he spent a year traveling around the world, and then settled down to a fifteen-year career in book and magazine publishing.  He was the president and publisher of “Harvest Years” magazine, a retirement planning periodical.

In 1961, he and Barry Hope were married.  In 1971, with their two sons, Dallas III and Peter, they moved from New York to Bloxom, Va.  Dallas’ second career included 30 years in real estate development on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  His projects included Vaucluse Shores, Trails End Campground, Creek Bluff, Rue’s Wharf, Hopeland, Blenheim, Royall Woods, Bayport, and Bay Haven.

In 1979, he and Peggy DePuy Scott were married.  In 1983 they moved to Onancock, where they enjoyed life on Onancock Creek, socializing with friends, and traveling.

Dallas enjoyed keeping in touch with his relatives and organized several family reunions.  He was a lifelong fan of the “Big Apple”, the Yankees, the Jets, martinis, the New York Times, crossword puzzles, Chesapeake Bay retrievers, fine dining, and reading.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; son Peter, and his three daughters, Taylor, Virginia and Clare; stepson Thomas Jarvis Scott, Jr., his wife Cara, and sons Ty and Trey; grandsons Dallas and David Swan; his nieces Susan Nuedling, Cindy Klemenger, Cathy Klemenger, and Julie Lesser, and their children Kristin, Lisa, and Matthew.

He was predeceased by his first wife Barry, their son Dallas D. Swan III, and a niece Sandy Stillwell.

Dallas had a stroke in 2012 which left him unable to walk without assistance and unable to talk normally, both significant handicaps for a man who had been traveling the world, selling many a parcel of land, and telling many a story.

The family will welcome friends at the home, 24220 Swan Lane in Onancock, on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., for a reception to honor and share memories of Dallas’ life.
