Mrs. Joan Curley Cockey, 77, wife of the late Harry Montrose Slade Cockey, and a resident of Pungoteague, Va. for the past twenty-five years, formerly of Scituate, Mass., passed away at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, Va., on Thursday, October 22, 2015.

Born March 5, 1938 in Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charles Curley and Anna Powers Curley.  Joan will most fondly be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.  She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, where she was a founding member of their Ladies’ Auxiliary; an active member of the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, where she enjoyed playing golf and socializing; and was a ‘Class of 2013’ inductee in the St. Gertrude High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Cockey is survived by three sons, Christopher Slade Cockey and wife Patricia, of Hanover, Mass., Michael Kevin Cockey and wife Terry, of Portsmouth, RI, and James Denmead Cockey and wife Gretchen, of Naperville, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Sean, Emily, Katherine, Stephen, Charlie, Anna and Lauren Cockey; a sister, Pat Glass and her husband Ben, of Annandale, Va.; a brother, Phillip Curley of Jacksonville, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Ann Curley, Theresa Kerner and Margaret Raymond; and two brothers, Charles and David Curley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Onley, Va., Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., with Father Rogelio L. “Father Roger” Abadano officiating.  Interment will follow in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock.  There will be a visitation at the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 28, 2015, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 860, Onley, Va.  23418.
