Mr. Sherwood Spencer Shreaves, 92, husband of the late Mary Lena Milliner Shreaves and a resident of Melfa, Va., passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at HealthSouth Chesapeake Rehabilitation Hospital in Salisbury, Md.

Born December 16, 1923 in Muttonhunk, Va., he was a son of the late William Shreaves and Mary Littleton Shreaves.  Sherwood was a 1940 graduate of Parksley High School.  From November 1942 until October 1945, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant, in the 3rd Division.  He fought in World War II, in Guam, the Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Bougainville.  Sherwood was recalled to active duty for the Korean War, serving from October 1950 until October 1951.  He retired as President and CEO of The Citizens National Bank in Laurel, MD, a Mercantile Bank affiliate, a position he held for ten years, thus completing his successful forty-year career in the banking industry.  He was a lifelong Yankees fan, enjoyed traveling with his wife, played handball and racquet ball, loved animals, and attended Melfa United Methodist Church.  An avid golfer, Sherwood was a member of the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club in Melfa, and formerly of the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Md.  During his retirement, many would see Sherwood exercising as he walked around his community, “The Greens”, and on Country Club Road, where those were always greeted with his pleasant smile and wave.  He truly enjoyed his 92 years here on earth, and will be missed.

Survivors include his two children, The Reverend Gregory Shreaves of Reading, PA, and Cynthia Shreaves of Cockeysville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews, Patricia (Stacey) Redican, Suzanne (Kenneth) Henderson, Otto B. (Laura) Shreaves, Jr., and Betsy (Kenneth) Cousins.  In addition to his loving wife of sixty-six years, he was predeceased by three sisters, Vesta Shreaves Reichardt, Georgia Shreaves Hughey, and Oneda Shreaves Krammer; four brothers, Alwood Lee, Edward, Otto, and Preston Shreaves; and a nephew, Alwood L. Shreaves, Jr.

A celebration of Sherwood’s life will be held at the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Robert Coniglio officiating.
