Born August 19, 1919 in Bloxom, Va., he was a son of the late Lewis Richard Young and Lena Lewis Young.  Pete was graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Class of 1944, receiving a BS in Agricultural Economics, and remained a faithful, proud, and supportive alumni of Virginia Tech throughout his life.  He served his country for two years in the United States Army, European Theater, and was a 2nd Lt. in the 86th Infantry Division.

Pete served as Director of single-family operations for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Following early retirement from the HUD in 1974, he later served as the Building Commitment Program Manager in the single-family division of the Virginia Housing Development Authority.

Pete was extremely active in the Virginia Tech Hokie Club and Alumni Association; was a past-president of the Tuckahoe Lion’s Club in Richmond; and was a member of Belle Haven Presbyterian Church. He treasured time spent with his family, and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing.

In addition to his loving wife, Barbara, survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Young Hiller and her husband Doug, of Charlottesville, Va., and Deborah Young Harless and her husband David, of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; seven grandchildren, Sarah Chakales, Carolyn Jenkins (and husband Joe), Taylor Harless, Emily Hiller, Jordan Harless (and wife Veronica), Kenzie Chakales, and Ann Warren Harless; a great-grandchild, Miles Jenkins; a niece, JoAnn Young Payne (and husband Harris); a nephew, Mark Lewis Thomas; and sister-in-law, Jane Lewis Hoppe.  Besides his parents, Pete was predeceased by two sisters and their husbands, Mabel Young Miles (Harry), and Margaret Young Milliner (Morris); and a brother and his wife, Broadus Young (Audrey).

The family wishes to share their sincere gratitude and appreciation for all of the loving caregivers who have taken extraordinary care of their parents, and the Hospice team who kept Pete comfortable at the end of his life, allowing him to remain at home with his beautiful wife of sixty-four years.
