Mr. John Woodland “Woodie” Rew, 91, husband of the late Katherine Northam “Kitty” Rew and a resident of Onancock, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at Chesapeake Caregivers in Trappe, Md.

Born March 11, 1924, he was a son of the late Rufus Rew and Hazel Allen Rew.  Woodie served his country in the United States Army Air Corps.  He remained a proud veteran throughout his life, being an active member of Accomack V.F.W. Post 2296 in Tasley, Va., and American Legion Post 91 in Cambridge, Md.

Woodie’s first job was working for the family business, a marine supply and grocery store, in Deep Creek, Va.  He was a sales associate with Oceanway Distributors, and later retired from Accomack County Social Services Department.  Woodie was very dedicated to his church and community.  In addition to being a longtime member of Market Street United Methodist Church, in June of this year, he would have been a sixty-year member of the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department, holding many positions, and volunteering numerous hours at the Onancock V.F.D. Carnival, throughout the years.  He coached the Fireman’s team for Accomack County Little League, was known for refinishing antique furniture for many years, and was a diehard Yankees and Redskins fan.  He spent many hours during his retirement years, with longtime friends at the Onancock Wharf Liar’s Bench.  In November of 2014, Woodie moved to be with his daughter and son-in-law in Maryland, and they provided loving care to him since that time.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen R. Windsor and husband Carson, of East New Market, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Alma Bundick, and Mabel Weir; and a brother, Earl “Buddy” Rew.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with The Reverends J. Barton Weakley and Albert L. Crockett officiating.  Interment with fireman rites and military honors will follow, at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock.  There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department, c/o David Mason, 24311 Bailey Neck Drive, Onancock, Va.  23417, or to Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market Street, Onancock, Va.  23417.
